The Sidewinder truck is revolutionary because, with the addition of the extra pivot and set of bushings, it gives a regular truck more than a 100% increase in flex, board tilt, turning radius, shock absorption and traction. With the better turning also comes the ability to carve steep hills with more control, being able to traverse such hills with sharp 4-5ft. radius turns, which is almost impossible with single pivot trucks. This leads to more control for this kind of carving, and also helps younger or lighter riders control the boards with greater skill.
And although the Sidewinder is mostly a carving and pumping truck, and not really designed for high speed downhill, it is capable of higher speed riding if it is adjusted properly. Sidewinder riders who want to ride at speeds over 20-25mph just need to know how to best tighten down the trucks,and particularly the kingpin which is attached to the baseplate and controls the middle insert. If tightened all the way down, this extra set of 'insert' bushings will be highly restricted from movement,which in turn reduces the effect of the insert itself. This makes the Sidewinders ride more like regular, 'single pivot' trucks, and thereby they become more stable at higher speeds.
So the Sidewinders pretty much have the best of both worlds, the ability to hypercarve and make extremely sharp turns, and also to cruise at higher speeds, like regular, single pivot trucks can... as long as the Sidewinder riders know how to properly adjust the trucks before attempting high speed carving or bombing. But, in the end, this really isn't a new concept, as all skateboarders need to know how to properly adjust their trucks. It's just that with the Sidewinders there are 2 kingpins to tighten, instead of 1. But more options also make it more fun.
