Can't speak for skateboarding, but in derby, these would work well for smaller skaters who struggle to fit into other pads or for those who want good protection without a lot of bulk. Most non-custom pads slip around on my legs because they are too long; these stay in place, I haven't fallen on them yet, or not unintentionally, but I can do knee taps on quad skates without feeling a thing. That's more than I could say about my Pro-Tecs.
